Welcome to the Piedmont Hiking & Outing Club
The Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club is a volunteer group founded in 1982. We have approximately 400 members, including individuals and families. Members come from the Piedmont area of North Carolina, including Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Thomasville, Burlington and surrounding communities. Our members represent a wide range of age and professional and family characteristics. Most members are in their 40's, 50's, and 60's, but we have an increasing number of younger members and couples in their 20's and 30's and some active members who are older. Families participate as well. Our club offers opportunities and challenges for everyone.
We publish a newsletter called 'TrailMarker' every two months. The newsletter is mailed and emailed to members and extra copies are placed at several outdoor stores around the Piedmont Triad. The 'TrailMarker' usually lists at least four member-led hikes or walks each week (Wednesday, two on Saturday, and Sunday) year round. These hikes range in difficulty and distance from easy to very challenging, usually three to twenty miles. Regular hiking areas include:
- Greensboro Watershed Trails
- Pilot Mountain State Park
- Hanging Rock State Park
- Stone Mountain State Park
- Doughton Park of the Blue Ridge Parkway
- Linville Gorge
- The Black Mountains (including Mount Mitchell)
- Mount Rogers and Grayson Highlands
- South Mountains State Park
- and many more throughout North Carolina and Virginia
- camping, canoeing/kayaking, bike, or ski trips
- dinner outings, club parties, or picnics
- and other events, including group trips all over the country
