loop going up to Moore’s Knob, which we will hike from West to East. The hike will be mostly moderate, with a bit
more uphill on the Moore's Wall Loop.

July 4 Mt
Shepherd
Sunday Asheboro
I have a “close to home” and “short and easy”
outing for the 4th of July.
We’ll walk the Loop Trail around Mt Shepherd (2.8 miles) and then head
up the mountain (2.0 mi round trip) and access the observation tower on
top. At 1156’ Mt Shepherd is the
highest point in Randolph County. You’ll want to skip this part if you fear
heights since the tower is 120’, well above the surrounding trees. Clear day views extend to Hanging Rock, Mt
Pilot and all of the Triad cities. Mt
Shepherd Retreat is privately owned and located 6 miles west of Asheboro, off
Rte 64. We’ll start and end the hike at
the main lodge with access to restrooms and water. Meet at the Mt Shepherd Lodge at 1:45 pm or contact me and we’ll
try to arrange a carpool from Winston-Salem and Greensboro. [4.8 miles R18]

July 10 Grandfather
Mountain, Scout Trail
Saturday
The first half of this hike will be a 3.7 mile,
2100-foot ascent of the northeastern end of the Grandfather Mountain ridge from
the Blue Ridge Parkway to Calloway Peak by way of the Daniel Boone Scout Trail,
which has two magnificent overlooks - one to the north and one to the
south. Lunch will be on 5964-foot Calloway Peak, with superb
views in many directions. The return
route will be partly the same but will also include overlooks along the Cragway
Trail and the Nuwati Trail. Several
ladders on the route must be negotiated, but they are not in locations which
create a vertigo problem. Shade and the
high altitude will reduce the impact of the July heat. The difficulty of the trail surface in
sections makes comfortable hiking boots advisable. Bring water, lunch, and rain gear. [7.5 miles, 2200 feet, R32]
July 10 Reedy
Fork & Laurel Bluff
Saturday Greensboro
Watershed trails
This hike will take us along either side of Reedy
Fork Creek and the upper end of Lake Townsend between Lake Brandt Road and

pace, close to home, and still make those Saturday evening plans. Trailhead parking is on the right side of
Lake Brandt Road just past the marina and dam.
Meet at 9:00 am. Lunch afterward
at New York Deli, a club favorite, is an option for those interested. Please call or email if you have
questions. [7.5 miles, R9]

July 11 Lake
Brandt Beginner’s Paddle
Sunday Lake
Brandt Marina
For those of you who have promised to finally get
in a kayak this year, this is your chance!
We’ll paddle from the Lake Brandt Marina to the Weaver Bridge, and
possibly to Horsepen Creek, and return to the Marina after about 2 hours on the
water. The marina has 12 rental kayaks
which cost $10 including the launch fee.
There are also 5 tandem kayaks which cost $15. For those with your own kayaks, the launch fee is $4. You should wear clothing and shoes that can
get wet, plus sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.
Gloves are also a good idea to prevent paddle blisters. Bring a water bottle and snack. I will have extra drybags if needed, or
ziplocs should be fine. Meet at the
marina on Lake Brandt Road at 9:00 am.
An early lunch afterward is an option, and we should have plenty of time
to clean up and make it to the ice cream social in the afternoon.

Rogers NRA
Most of this hike is on the AT and is over 5,000
feet in elevation. This hike starts at
Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park.
There is a $3 per vehicle charge to enter the park. The trail follows the open mountain bald of
Wilburn Ridge to the heavily wooded summit of Mount Rogers, at 5,729 feet, the
highest point in Virginia. There are
many semi-wild ponies in the open meadows along the trail. And the meadow views are wonderful. I’m expecting a hot day and will encourage a
slow pace. Since much of this route is
in open meadow, I will have an area alternate hike planned in the event an
electrical storm is likely. Please meet
at Shoney’s 7:00 am, Jonestown exit McDonalds at 7:30 am. Drive is 85 miles from W-S [8 miles, 1700 ft,

July 18 Foster
Falls to Fries Junction Bike Ride
Sunday New
River Trail State Park
This will be a 32-mile, out-and-back ride at
Virginia’s New River Trail State Park - one of the southeast’s best
rails-to-trails conversions. The
relatively flat and car-traffic-free ride begins at Foster Falls, a village
that dates from the mid-1800s. Our trip
will take us through the 135-foot New River train tunnel and over the 670-foot
Ivanhoe Trestle, which is a great place to stop for water and enjoy the
panorama of the river valley. Shortly
after passing two dams built in 1913 for the Appalachian Power Company, we will
arrive at our turnaround point and shady lunch spot where the Chestnut Creek
spur of the trail from Galax meets the main trail from Fries. There is a nominal parking fee at Foster
Falls. The trail requires durable
tires. While on our bicycles, riders
will maintain approximately a 10 mph pace.

descending back into the gorge, lined with gigantic boulders. The loop hike
ends with several miles along a rushing stream. Please contact me if you are

the Jomeokee Trail around the knob. We
finish the hike, after a brief stop at the top of the mountain, down the
Grindstone Trail back to the Ranger Station where we started. We will meet at Shoney's at Hwy 68 and I-40

We are well into summer now and I know everyone
has gotten into great shape from all the hiking they have been doing. Let’s hike the rhododendron and laurel lined
trails, and the open mountain top meadows of Doughton Park. On this hike we will go up Flat Rock trail
to get a good cardiovascular workout and continue on along Bluff Mountain for
some great views along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Then we will go down Cedar Ridge from Brinegar Cabin back to the parking
area to complete a loop of nearly 17 miles and an elevation gain of around
3,000 feet. For those that would like
to stop for dinner and a cold drink afterwards, we can decide on a mutually
acceptable place. Please don’t forget to
bring plenty of water and rain gear.
Although we are planning for a nice summer day with cooler than normal
temperatures, the higher powers do not always read our hike schedules. Greensboro area folks will meet at Shoney’s

sheltered stream. Beginning at the Dan River trailhead, we will walk alongside
beautiful Indian Creek with a few easy stream crossings. The stream is usually
low, but it has been known to swell after a big rain, so bring your poles if
you use them. On the way up we will take time to explore both Window Falls and
Hidden Falls. After enjoying the falls,
those that choose will continue on to Hanging Rock. For those going up to
Hanging Rock, this becomes an R27. This
is a moderate paced hike. Please call or email to let me know you are coming,
or if you have questions. Meet at Shoney’s at 8 am or 9 am in the parking area
